As humans, we’re inclined to carry beliefs, which is an acceptance that something is true, but that may rely on faith or trust. Believing in yourself involves having faith, trust, and confidence in yourself, but it’s possible to have self-limiting beliefs that get in the way of that.

In general, self-limiting beliefs are negative self-talk that is often rooted in an experience or an unsupportive environment. These beliefs are most often wrong. This negative belief often results in limiting your confidence and telling yourself that you’re incapable of achieving your goals. 

Self-limiting beliefs aren’t always there, but they do have a way of creeping up on you, especially when you least expect it. When they do, they have the power to block you from fulfilling your full potential and have you second-guess your every move. Even high achievers can battle with self-limiting beliefs. They get things done but the extra energy required to get out of their own way exhausts them and keeps the accomplishments from feeling as great as possible. 

Here are a few examples of self-limiting beliefs:

  • Claiming you don’t have the right qualifications or experience for a job
  • The feeling that someone else can do something better than you
  • Feeling restricted by your age, race, gender, or other factors out of your control
  • A lack of time or money without exploring alternatives or compromises
  • You can only do certain things; “I’m not a writer”, “I’m not a nature person”

Luckily, these beliefs are not a permanent state of being and you can change them by starting to identify them and challenging these parts of your identity and believing in yourself.

Do they happen in a particular environment? Past life experiences? Or maybe when you’re with certain people or completing a certain task?

Have they made you say no to new opportunities that would have had a positive change in your life, such as a new career opportunity? Or maybe you procrastinated on doing something and wasted more time than you should have.

Self-limiting beliefs derive from a story you tell yourself again and again, to the point that you’re convinced it is true. If you’ve told yourself that you’re unworthy countless times, of course, you’re going to feel unworthy and let that get in the way of you pursuing new opportunities or basking in the recognition you deserve.

The opposite of self-limiting beliefs are self-empowering beliefs. These beliefs give you your confidence back and lead you to success.

Here are a few examples of self-empowering beliefs:

  • Understanding that you are in control of your life
  • Reframing failure as the only outcome to learn from
  • Letting go of the past, focusing on the present, and letting the future be
  • Dreaming big and striving for what you know you deserve

It isn’t easy, but it is entirely possible to turn your self-limiting beliefs into ones of self-empowerment. The good news is that you don’t have to figure it out alone.
